I was hinting at the thread in TMP :)

This article is so biased and anti-EU it's staggering.
Pretty much the entire article lays the blame at the door of the EU and the law change, yet never actually mentions that it's the bloody insurance companies that have decided to hike up the prices of young female drivers.
Crappy, lazy, biased journalism.

The BBC that well known eurosceptic institution
Anyway what did you expect insurance companies to do. Once they could not differentiate premium costs according to sex, there was no way they were going to reduce premiums for the highest risk category young male drivers. So this means that the lowest risk categories would rise thus meaning young female drivers would suddenly find their premiums going up.
Cause and effect.

This was always going to be the case.
It could've been reported as such, which it wasn't.

I think that is a reasonable way of looking at this. It also will mean women's pensions being worse for the same reason. Quite frankly it might acceptable to allow risk based on sex to continue. Though what about life insurance and preexisting conditions? Should everyone else be assessed on the basis of a 96 year old skydiver who smokes?

Tbf, it's the latest in a series of articles, and from named correspondents rather than part of the usual 'news' output. It seems to be what people want these days - how the hell else do you explain Robert Peston? ;)

I don't mind it if there's other info around it, but the tabloid headlines and context that's now at the heart of standard BBC articles can fcuk right off

Well it's eithe rthat or they drop the prices for young men. They understandably won't do that as they'll loose money. So yes, it it is the EU's fault IMO.

Personally I'm glad of the change. Yes it means I will pay more in January for Faye and I, but then with an accident and two speeding offended to her name she was already the most expensive driver.

I'm glad because it brings equality, and I feel that that is very important.

Indeed. Why is prejudice against one group of people not allowed, while it continues legally against other groups? First race, then gender, then..?

The only policy that does not discriminate is "one price for all". I'm guessing that would probably mean premiums of around £1500 per person, compared to the £200 or so I would currently pay.

Alternatively, we could do the same as other critical services and tax according to income. An unemployed 17 year old man would be insured for free, while a better off middle class person would pay around £20,000pa.

Completely agree. The EU made the right call, discrimination of pricing based on someone's actual driving and claims history is one thing, but to bump up their premium purely based on their gender is unacceptable.

It seems a lot fairer that way, but the insurance industry might disagree. As I am getting closer to retirement age my home insurance should become cheaper as well, but that will largely be based on my age which is in itself discriminatory.

Here, they are advertising reduced rates for male drivers on TV. Women's insurance goes up a bit, men's insurance comes down to meet it in the middle.
