Quote:
Newly elected police and crime commissioners have been hit by accusations of cronyism and empire-building as nearly half of them have moved to appoint deputies on substantial salaries to help carry out their new role.

In one case, a Conservative PCC has proposed appointing 17 new staff, including four assistant commissioners on salaries of £65,000, to take over from the six existing staff employed by the police authority he replaces. Adam Simmonds is proposing to create an office for drug eradication among several other new roles he has outlined in Northamptonshire.

The swift moves by the commissioners to establish themselves come as the police arbitration tribunal recommended the starting pay of new police constables should be cut by £4,000 to £19,000 a year.

more jobs for the boys, remember we are all in this together (not)
there will be a deputy then a sub deputy then a acting sub deputy with offices and staff for all etc etc etc

but they will have to cut the police numbers and/or salaries or privatise it to pay for it, ho hum

i will just stop voting for anything or anyone and let them just get on with it because no matter what nothing changes until it goes bang ...

This entire commissioners thing is a bad idea and waste of money IMO.

I agree. They will be on £100k a year for three years if not more. So who will pay for this? Will it come out of central government or local funds? Either way it would pay for three or four nurses teachers or police officers. Most of the changes have been to dumb down the police with community officers who have no real powers but are cheap. Why not use benefit claimants, and give them a decent pay, plus it gives them experience. It would be cheaper overall, and actually give people decent work experience. Chief constables already have to prioritise objectives.

Hiring staff to conduct research or deal with administration etc is one thing, but I really can't see the justification for hiring "assistant commissioners".

Swearing never to vote in the elections again is not going to help anything, you're supposed to vote for someone else if you don't like the incumbent's approach.

Bit of a problem when everybody else either has basically same approach or is BNP or UKIP.

Living in Northampton I was reading about this story last night and thought "what an absolute tosser this new PCC is" - wasting money that could be spent putting coppers out on the beat.

Typical of all polititions though once they get their noses in the trough.

All I can say is I didn't vote for him and, hopefully, in 3 years time no-one else will either. :x
