And that's what it would appear to take for someone to actually get fired by the FCA - public attention that exposes just how greedy the bankers have gotten, leaving them all open to deserved ridicule. That's the real reason this guy had to go. It's not like he was, you know, profiting from literally destroying the global economy.

The City watchdog said he "demonstrated a lack of honesty and integrity".

They must have chuckled wryly when they typed that up.

Glad he was made to pay back the forty odd grand in fares he'd missed.

He was a hedge fund manager and, while I'm not suggesting he was in the George Soros league, I doubt he was short of a bob or two.

To me, that suggests he did it because he could, not because he had to. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a frequent boast to his peers.

I suspect in his case it was partly a question of scale - if you're earning thousands of pounds a week, things like train fares become utterly trivial. There probably was some aspect of 'thrill seeking' in it as well though, high pressure jobs tend to generate a lot of adrenaline and the people who do them get addicted to it. The whole 'need to do more risky things to get a bigger adrenaline hit to get more reward' cycle was thought to be part of the basis for the market crash. They weren't only just taking more risks to make more money, they were taking more risks because their brains had become completely acclimatised to small risks. They'd have taken the risks even if the return hadn't been as great just to get the hit.
