Quote:
"Not all of the people who pirate do it because it's free - availability is also a big factor," Ernesto Van Der Sar told the BBC.

"Most of the titles in the top 10 list are behind paywalls and are not distributed very widely. If TV companies offered them online to a broader audience, piracy would be lower than it is now.

"But I'm not sure that would be best for their revenues as they rely on expensive subscriptions which they still sell a lot of. If they allowed people to download individual episodes from Netflix, for example, they might not make as much money."

They are not interested in providing content that suits the customer. So the customer is finding workarounds. I would expect Downton Abbey to be in the list as Americans are crazy for that show right now.

Most of the customers aren't interested in paying anything for the content in question so the industry has no incentive to do so.

How big do you think their membership are compared to the number of people who download stuff from usenet & torrents?

Isn't the majority bandwidth at peak time in the States down to Netflix? Allegedly? That would take some doing, 'HD' or not :? :|

Not really relevant any more since it came out on DVD & Bluray ages ago.

But as an illustration of the industry's short comings... it's pretty good.

Well not really, since nowadays it would skip from the second to the last frame and all the stuff in between wouldn't happen.

Nowadays? You make it sound like torrenting TV shows is a new thing. Top Gear was the most pirated show for years.

No, nowadays our friend goes to netflix, it says "Ok then' and he can stream it straight away, or at worst get the DVD/BluRay through the post tomorrow. OK, maybe not in the particular case that today is Christmas day tomorrow but usually. The whole thing about how difficult it is to get stuff through legal sources doesn't apply when the thing you're after is something that's been out a while. Although I do notice it doesn't appear to be on the UK iTunes store yet but then why the hell would you ever buy video from there anyway.

We do still have the whole 'it comes out on DVD three months after it's been in the cinema and you can d/l a bootleg in the meantime' thing but that's a slightly different argument.

Are shows getting to NetFlix that quickly then?
Take something like series 5 of Fringe. Is that on NetFlix in the UK yet?

I couldn't honestly say, I dumped my netflix membership as I wasn't using it much and you can't search their database unless you're a member. Some stuff used to be on there before it came out on DVD but generally it showed up on Netflix when it was available to buy in the shops.
