Probably the only non WW2 general I could name. |

I could probably manage a couple more, but he's by far and away the most well known. General Charles Krulak is the only one that I can think of, but that's because I used to work for him when I was at MBNA Europe and I got to meet him on a couple of occasions. Phenomenal chap I have to say. |

One of the few biographies I actually read - It doesn't take a Hero Well worth a read - shows how he wanted to get rid of Saddam in Gulf War 1 but Bush told him no. |

On reflection, Bush might have been right, even inadvertently ![]() |

But don't forget that he drained the marshes after the war if I remember right. Bush stopped the advance for fear of losing the arab coalition, as they had not signed up to regime change. I also think the slaughter on the road out of Kuwait also changed public opinion. |

I'm sure pressure was brought to bear no matter what, I'm talking about today's hindsight ![]() |

Hindsight is a wonderful thing but at the time it was the right decision. They could have stormed all the way up to Baghdad without any trouble but they would have been alone. Also I do not know if they had released the human shields by that point, which would have been another problem. |

Plus there were enough oil fires in Kuwait to put out, without having to deal with loads more in Iraq. |
