even a curious polar bear approached the hole amid the commotion.
Siasie Kasudluak said the bear was shot by a local hunter for its meat.

That surprised me.

I suspect because, given we're always told how threatened polar bears are by glacial erosion & what have you, you'd half expect them to be a protected species some how.

A lot of animals on the planet are in danger. Do you eat cod? I stopped years ago.

The places these people live are incredibly harsh so they will eat what the land & water provides. They can't just pop down to the corner shop for something to eat.

I don't generally eat white fish but it's not an ethical stance, it's just coincidence. And, cynically, one might suggest a fish is not as photogenic as a polar bear.

There are examples in the past of shipping alternatives in to remote hunter communities to dissuade them from eating the nearby endangered species. I don't think it's been tried at the poles though, this was about primates in Africa.

Yes but eskimos only eat what they need and do not export polar bear meat. The same applies to the few whales that they have been granted hunting licenses for. I have no problems with eskimos hunting whales but do not extend that to the Japanese or Norwegians.
