They probably thought that the driver had sent the son in to pay for the petrol. Still quite an achievement. It does make me wonder why he was split up from his sister.

What borders? Most are unmanned these days, or they only filter out HGV traffic. Driving across Austria to Italy, I've never seen border guards.

In fact he could have made it to Poland without seeing a border guard.
