Post subject:  Bali drugs: Death sentence for Briton

Quote:
A 56-year-old British grandmother has been sentenced to death by firing squad in Indonesia for drug trafficking.

Lindsay Sandiford was arrested at Bali's airport in May last year after 4.8kg (10.6lb) of cocaine was found in the lining of her suitcase during a routine customs check.

Quote:
Prosecutors had recommended a 15-year sentence of imprisonment.

But the judges said there were no mitigating circumstances and the defendant did not appear to care about the consequences of her actions.

They said Sandiford had damaged the image of Bali as a tourism destination and weakened the government's anti-drugs programme.

More from the BBC here.

I'm not entirely sure how shooting a woman is going to help Bali's image either. She's an idiot for getting involved but bearing in mind the prosecution asked for a 15-year sentence of imprisonment, it seems a little OTT.

Well the judge could be wanting to make a name for him or herself. Some countries elect their judges and being tough on traffickers is good for their re-election chances.

Well she's only got herself to blame. It was hidden in the lining. It's not as if she could claim that somebody had opened her bag in transit and popped the drugs package inside.
To be honest I doubt she'll be shot. Diplomats and politicians will get involved, highlighting what a bad idea it is to take drugs to Bali (which I'm sure is the message they want to get across). It'll probably be reduced to a long sentence in the end.

According to what I've just heard on the radio, the length/severity of the sentence is largely dependent on how much money you bung the judiciary. Access to outside funds also determines the quality of your prison life, ranging from begging for scraps to being moderately well fed.

That is if she makes it more than a few months. Smuggling drugs is stupid.
