Quote:
A veteran British TV presenter was charged with rape and 14 counts of indecent assault on underage girls, police said on Tuesday, deepening concerns about sex abuse by top BBC personalities decades ago.

Stuart Hall, 83, best known for hosting "It's a Knockout" in the 1970s and 1980s, was questioned after late broadcaster Jimmy Savile was exposed last year as a serial child sex abuser, prompting a flurry of further sex crime allegations.

Hall, who was still appearing regularly on BBC radio until recently, had already been charged with three counts of indecent assault, in December. He denied all charges.

Hall was bailed to appear before magistrates in Preston, northwest England, on February 7.

The rape was alleged to have been committed in 1976 against a 22-year old woman, the police said. The indecent assaults were alleged to have been committed between 1967 and 1986 and to involve 10 girls aged between nine and 16 years.

There was no immediate comment by the BBC, Britain's public broadcaster whose director general was forced out of office by the Savile scandal.

We might as well smash the sculptures off Broadcasting House and demand the BBC changes its corporate font.

Don't forget that during much of that period the BBC was the largest TV company. ITV was then a series of small regional commercial TV operations and so it will have legacy problems from what its staff got up to in their own time let alone while working for the BBC. In fact any large organisation that has thousands of employees will have problems. As Big D pointed out that the suicide rate for Foxcon in China appears high because they employ so many, yet on a par with any town of similar size. The same could be applied to the Post Office with its hundreds of thousands of staff who might commit robberies or other offences. It is not necessarily a problem in the BBC.

Innocent until proven guilty as usual, but same as Savile, too many people making accusations... I fully expect them to wheel out the, 'It was so long ago, and he's a very old man' defence if it comes to it.

He's still alive, so he's got to face prosecution, his age shouldn't be a factor - assuming he's at least mentally capable.

On a purely selfish level, at least this means we'll be spared his utterly unintelligible doggerel that masquerade as match reports on telly for the forseeable.

The victim also deserves justice but it has been rather a long time to make a complaint. Savile targeted vulnerable girls, no mention of whom Hall was involved with.

It didn't seem to matter to him going by the ages, if the allegations are true.

I was wondering because of his age was the age of consent lower when he was a child? It has been 16 from 1885, and Hall would have been born after that date so he would have no excuse as to being with children. So he has no excuse that the law had changed in the intervening years.
