First it was 2 aircraft to help the French, then we added a spy plane and now we are adding troops.

Mission creep pure & simple.

How soon before we are actually fighting in Mali?

Why are we even interested in getting involved - the US arn't. It was a former French colony so let them sort it out or are we on the slippery slope to yet another war?

From various news sources on 13th January

Quote:
Asked if the UK could play any further part in the Mali operation, Mr Cameron's official spokesman told reporters at a regular Westminster briefing: 'We are providing logistical assistance to the French government. It is purely a logistical role.
'We have been very clear that this is a logistical role only. It will not be a combat role."

Official press briefing 21st January

Quote:
Addressing questions on military intervention in North Africa, the PMS said that there was no change in the support offered to the French in Mali – there would be no British troops in combat roles

350 front line soldiers for 'training'?

They were trying to dispel the “mission creep” story on the news today. I expect we’ll see a gradual redeployment of troops from Afghanistan to Africa. Eventually, triggers will be pulled by our servicemen (and women).
