Much of the costs could be down to marketing. It might be harder to market with closures of shops like Game. Though it could support gaming magazines, which is where I used to get my reviews of games from. Games are more complicated but they could be made more cheaply especially since many use a games engine as the core of the game.

That link is about disappointing sales not game dev costs. Is that the right link?

That is what I thought, the link doesn't match the thread...
That said, games need ever better graphics and ever better video material etc. which makes them more and more expensive.

There's such an over reliance on it now though, especially when you're attaching it to an undercooked, rushed game. They hired Brian Cox amongst others for Syndicate recently - the parts and storyline were such that they could have been played by anyone! Especially when the game was only about 6 hours long. There's some full-on delusions of grandeur going on with some devs, big and small.

I think what's happening is that thanks, in part, to the view (certainly in this country) that games are somehow a huge and vital media component to the economy then therefore there is money to be mined out of the marketplace before everyone wakes up and goes 'You want how much for doing what?' The devs will continue to charge huge amount partly because they can, partly because it's expected and partly because we're told how much the sector is worth. After a while, there's a separation between the genuine figure and what the industry believes it can get away with.
