Can't really see it myself, but who knows?

Hmm - Apple have tried it before. The Apple Pippin was a strange beast.

But the iPhone has shown that Apple could make a stab at a casual games console. I would imagine it being somewhere closer to the Wii than a PS3/XBox in terms of audience.

Apple have, I think, described the AppleTV as a hobby.
And just about nobody's bought one.

I'd love to see it though. More games on OS X will only be a good thing.

Games might bring them the audience that they seek. Describing it as a “hobby” makes you think that Apple have a bloke with a shed tinkering with bits, and that is what he came up with. It’s obviously Apple testing the water, but for me it’s not got a record function, which my PS3 has (with an add on).

I kind of think that Apple TV is another device showing how their OS can be used in devices other than a full blown computer. Hobby? Maybe. The thing with Apple is that you never quite know what their plans are. What we DO know is that if they do games for the Apple TV, developers will already have the tools, knowledge and expertise to do so.

Apple probably do have an equivalent of a man in a shed, tinkering away, and he's probably called Jon Ives, with some other chaps in the Apple equivalent of a brown storemans coat working on the software.

Found it - the reference to it as a hobby - clicky.

“We're in two busineses today, we'll be very shortly in three business and a hobby. One is our Mac business, second is our music business, third business is the phone business, handsets. And the hobby is Apple TV. The reason I call it a hobby is a lot of people have tried and failed to make it a business. It's a business that's hundreds of thousands of units per year but it hasn't crested to be millions of units per year, but I think if we improve things we can crack that.”

I know so many people who bought into the Wii and now it just sits there - if Apple was aiming for small cheap games like on the iPhone, it could be a whole other ball game. Even Sony are planning something similar with the PSP now.

However it'd need some sort of killer function, and I don't see that being the TV side of it, at least not for a long while in consumer's eyes :?

Well if they could play ordinary mac games on the Apple TV then yes I would consider it. Though for me there simply are not enough reasons to get one. That could change and is definitely on the to consider pile.
