Your thinking's inefficient, son. The consumer loses out in just about every way short of a Steam-style sale. Oh, and kids use cash...

EA CFO Blake Jorgensen said recently that the industry "will probably never be 100 percent digital" due to bandwidth constraints and the limitations of in-home storage. Retailers will continue to play an important role for publishers, contested Jorgensen, as he highlighted the 'benefits' of the much-debated used games business.

I think that is wrong. People can add bigger drives quite easily. The Apple App Store model is actually quite good in that it is very flexible for purchases. The fact that it seems to be doing quite well shows that that the broadband excuse might not be valid either.

Games are a luxury discretionary item so when people are finding things are tough games might be cut from the budget. Though they might decide that they will get a game as a treat so that might add sales.

I know (I'd heard that since PS1), but there's no sense in shortening your reach, ethical or not.

There must be a significant number of older people who are happy to play computer games. Computers have been in the home since the very early 1980's so anyone born after 1970 would be young enough to have had a home computer at home during their childhood. Many will have become gamers then and many will still enjoy playing computer games. So it would explain why older gamers are prevalent.
