I think the whole thing is tragic. Even more so the way some people celebrate a death.

It not a case of celebrating a death, it's case of not feeling the usual sense of sadness.

Though I can see why those involved would celebrate it. If that was my children he'd done that to, I'd be delighted if he suffered a drawn out agonising death.

This is the risk that every child killer or paedophile faces in gaol.

It's deferred revenge rather than justice (after all, it won't bring the child back) but I find it pretty much impossible to have any sympathy for him.

Jon

depends on your definition of justice.

good old wiki puts forward these types
Quote:
Variations of justice

Utilitarianism is a form of consequentialism, where punishment is forward-looking. Justified by the ability to achieve future social benefits resulting in crime reduction, the moral worth of an action is determined by its outcome.
Retributive justice regulates proportionate response to crime proven by lawful evidence, so that punishment is justly imposed and considered as morally correct and fully deserved. The law of retaliation (lex talionis) is a military theory of retributive justice, which says that reciprocity should be equal to the wrong suffered; "life for life, wound for wound, stripe for stripe."[7]
Restorative justice is concerned not so much with retribution and punishment as with (a) making the victim whole and (b) reintegrating the offender into society. This approach frequently brings an offender and a victim together, so that the offender can better understand the effect his/her offense had on the victim.
Distributive justice is directed at the proper allocation of things—wealth, power, reward, respect—among different people.

I think it's tragic that you're suggesting that simple eye for an eye comments are celebrating death.

He tortured and killed a toddler, I'm perfectly OK with not having to pay for his upkeep any more.

This thread happens regularly.
In every case the sole reason for originating the thread is to voice satisfaction at the outcome.
After a while somebody with a sense of decency reminds you all that gloating over any death is uncivilized.

I'm not commenting on this thread or any others you're alluding to, but I honestly believe there are people in this world who deserve everything they get if we simply aren't gonna make real changes to just about every aspect of the justice system. In that absence, or indeed proper study of said sick fcuks, nothing's gonna change.

At it's most basic, we need evidence of what works long term and what doesn't. And that costs money and a willingness to admit these stories go a lot deeper than just headlines.

My definition would involve the child still being alive. Having them both dead, to my mind, doesn't actually make the situation any better all that much since I don't consider his life to be worth anything anyway. I don't see how losing something worthless improves things.

+1 We need to see justice that actually rehabilitates people to reduce crime. Not for it to act as university of crime.
