Given the stuff I've seen on open public sale around mainland Europe, I think maybe the general population don't agree with this position. And in any case you can't ban porn any more than you can ban prostitution or alcohol or drugs. It's been tried, it doesn't work. If there is enough demand for something somebody will supply it and the law be damned.

Surely there will be some very high profile case where legitimate brothels in Europe can't advertise their businesses To quote George Carlin: "If selling is legal, and f**king is legal, then why isn't selling f**king legal?!?!"

Ain't gonna happen.

On one site I read that people should hurry up and download a few terabytes just in case this is passed. It is unworkable and for Iceland to consider putting up filters for it, my concerns will be what next? filters against protesting?

It's a clumsy bit of political grandstanding, based around the ludicrously simplistic idea that all pornography is women being exploited by men. It's not ever going to happen, at least because while MEPs' might not be the sharpest tools in the box, they do at least generally know when they're asked to pass a law that will literally make them a worldwide laughing stock.

I think that the EU parliament have little involvement in screwing up or improving the economy. Look at the variations in performance in EU states. Some are doing considerably better than others all while using the same basic laws. The fact that some politician has decided to do this to make a name for herself is the real reason. If she wanted to have a real impact push for tougher rape sentences and equality laws. Also a lot of women like their porn as well, so they would not be happy either.

I don't read it as a proposal to ban all pornography, full stop.
Read the excerpt again.
As a woman of the female persuasion, I'd be only too happy to see a ban on semi-naked women being used to advertise stuff. If your product isn't able to sell itself on its own merits, why do you think it'll sell better if you drape a blonde over it?

Well it cuts both ways. No more diet coke ads with women drooling over a man or where they make the man look stupid, as they would also demean them.

a ban on all forms of pornography in the mediaWhat does that mean exactly? Which media? Presumably, all media. Or perhaps it only means news media, in which case I guess they just mean the Sun's page 3. "a ban on advertising for pornographic products and sex tourism", including measures in the "digital field"How do they ban advertising on the web? Most of the web isn't European. I really don't want a "Great Firewall of Europe" and I suspect it really isn't going to happen. :edit: - post needs a pony:

Especially the homosexual porn trade, women being exploited left, right and centre there! Interestingly an entrepreneur did the very same thing at an expo he ran, banned all booth babes publicly prior to the event and showed a company the door when they broke the rule (even more interestingly it's in IT where that sort of thing is deemed acceptable) https://twitter.com/Jason/status/308767687654391809and others are doing the same: http://www.egmnow.com/digitalnoob/eurog ... oth-babes/
