Again? That was big news back in the mid 90s. I guess they still haven't solved the problem.

There is only one technical way to solve the problem: Stick mobile masts on the beach where the cliffs don't block them. That would obviously cost a fortune, and isn't really viable when it only effects about 3 people. It would also never get planning permission. It's unlikely to happen, although the little pub could easily provide a micro-cell of some form for it's customers.

A less technical fix would be to knock down the cliffs, or destroy France.

The logical solution is already stated - if your phone says "Welcome to France Mobile" or whatever, then turn off roaming and accept the fact that not everywhere has a signal. It's not something the networks or phone manufacturers have any control over.

I imagine this must happen a lot where people live on the borders.

Actually, more expensive smart phones have GPS. Someone could write an app. and sell it to these three people.

I think along the border in Northern Ireland the same problem. I suspect that most European countries have similar problems along their borders. It is just that we never hear of them.

Yes, it is common in most countries that have physical borders, as opposed to a pool of water around them. Nothing to see here... Just turn of automatic roaming.

I would imagine along some borders it is major problem with interference, or blockage. Southern Germany with the mountains could be problematic and the German borders with Netherlands and Denmark which are particularly flat.
