I can't see how this has irreparably harmed THX. Though the patent is seemingly broad to cover iPods and the new iMacs.

There's plenty of prior-art from well before the 2008 date on that patent. It's another one of those obvious solutions that anyone would automatically use. Put the speaker where it fits, and duct the sound out to a narrower opening.

I remember the sub-bass unit in portable tape decks in the 80s commonly used that exact design.

In which case shouldn't the patent be invalid as prior art?

Though what about iPhone stands like the Aircurve that also amplified the sound through a channel?

That's pretty much the opposite - little speaker, big hole rather than big speaker, little hole.

It is the same process of channelling sound. I guess that the nuances of this patent elude me on this one. Though since this could be settled outside of court.
