I would have thought that the name would have been trademarked. If you followed this logic then even Dyson should not be trademarked or Microsoft Windows!

TBF, they've somewhat got a point. The iPad min is an iPad which is 'mini'. Should that not be covered by any trademarks they have on the original 'iPad' name? I mean, if they've trademarked 'iPad' nobody else is going to be able to make an 'iPad mini' anyway... |

If that is the case then yes I can see their point, as it is simply another variant of the iPad. |
