Developers working on apps for Google's smart glasses have been told they will not be allowed to place advertising within the device's display.

The newly-published terms and conditions for developers working on Glass also prohibit companies charging for apps.

The glasses, which have a five megapixel camera and voice-activated controls, have started to be shipped.

Makes you wonder whether this is a platform worth developing for then. I expect enthusiasts will do stuff, but what business model can support serious developers is beyond my feeble imagination.

Once upon a time Apple said that there wouldn't be third party native apps for iOS, then look what happened...

So if they can't charge for apps and they can't have adverts, how are they going to make money and why would they develop apps in the first place?

Charging for support. Perhaps charging for the service that the app uses. Or, see Jons post, by embedding Google Advertising into the apps and getting revenue through that?

Like in app advertising with iOS. Google will handle the advertising, and by making the apps free and dependent on advertising to pay developers they also gain from user habits.

Ah, so there are adverts. They just have to be Google ones.

Not yet, I would guess that Google would know who you are from the sale of the device to you and then try and link it with the information that they already have about you. Then as you wander about being a dork with the Google Glasses on they would be able to see if you looked at adverts, where you were, what restaurants you frequented all of which could on their own be quiet valuable to say a market research team all without any ads being involved. It could make location based services more profitable without needing to have adverts on the glasses. The crucial thing will be how much tracking data will they be allowed to gather.

It's just an information gathering device. That's about it. You may not be able to place adverts within the apps, but is there anything about how it'll respond to ads in the real world? Spend too long looking at a QR code on a billboard...

Does anyone actually scan QR codes these days? Even amongst us geeks? :? :|

Well that's the point - you may not actively need to scan the code, if the software's clever enough it can just register that you've seen that ad.

Only for something that is of interest to me. Though I have created a luggage tag with QR codes for my luggage.

The only time I've used a QR reader is during an episode of TBBT where it was prominently displayed in the comic book store.

My point is, is that even if there's no ad placement in the software itself what's to stop things being triggered by what you're seeing around you?
Google are, after all, an advertising company. This is like suggesting that Gillette have a wonderful new razor handle they'd like to sell you and then saying 'No, we're not interested in selling the blades.'
