Or it could just be, you know, wrong. We don't 'debate' whether the moon is made of cheese. The idea that a rule-of-thumb principle from one area of science would apply to another entirely area of science entirely is, well, stupid, frankly. We don't, for example, suggest the dinosaurs disappeared due to a manifestation of Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. This is no less silly. We know how evolution works and through paleontology we can examine the pace at which it works. We don't need some fluffyhead suggesting it's somehow related to the pace of improvement in transistor technology. Jon |

No, but it is interesting as there are mechanisms that cross areas, like the Fibonacci sequence being used in various forms in Computer Science, and are also found in the natural world. |

I think you're slightly missing the point of the piece. "These guys argue that it’s possible to measure the complexity of life and the rate at which it has increased from prokaryotes to eukaryotes to more complex creatures such as worms, fish and finally mammals. That produces a clear exponential increase identical to that behind Moore’s Law although in this case the doubling time is 376 million years rather than two years." As you say, through paleontology, they are examining the pace at which it works. It just so happens that like so many other things, Moore's Law is also an exponential increase. They happen to share the same kind of mathematical relationship to their growth. That's all. Nothing to do with transistors. |
