More than 600 people have applied to buy rundown homes in Stoke-on-Trent for £1 each, the city council has said.

Thirty five derelict homes, mainly two-bedroom terraced properties, will initially be sold off in the Cobridge area, with a further 89 to follow.

Under the £3m project, the local authority is offering loans of up to £30,000 to help complete essential repairs on the houses.

Can you just buy one, or do you have to... *gulp*... live there? ;)

I think that you have to live there. Though I wonder how many will have been bought by buy to let landlords?

Anyone applying must have lived in the city for the past three years.

Other criteria they must satisfy include:

A joint income of £18,000 to £25,000 a year - £30,000 maximum if they have children
Applicants must have been employed for the past two years
They must not own another property
They must have the right to live permanently in the UK
The new house must be their [bmain home for at least five years

I think these criteria will reduce the amount of BTL speculators.

Yes well thought out rules that will help first time buyers. Though I wonder if those on long term benefits like the disabled could qualify, as they need homes as well.

Lots of disabled have quite high non means tested incomes from DLA etc. The income cap is quite sensible for those the low paid that live in the area. The fact that long term disabled are seemingly excluded from such deals could be illegal.

Once you get into stoke, it's hard to get out. The signage is terrible.

No one in history has ever seen Stoke and said 'such a lovely place!'

Oh, don't be like that.

It'll be a nice place when it's finished.
