It does make sense. It makes migration from older variants much easier. The real surprise was that they removed it to start with.

Makes sense.
Not only because the lack of it was annoying, but businesses tend to wait for the first service pack (or 8.1 in this case) of a new OS before upgrading. As they'll be using the desktop more, the lack of start buttion would be an issue for them. I'm guessing this is MS's attempt to get them to ugrade from XP to 8 rather than from XP to 7.

EDIT

WFT? I've just reread that. They're bringing back the start button, but not the start menu? What's the point in that?

I read this on the pcpro website and was surprised to see this bit:
Quote:
it will not include the familiar Start menu for finding and launching programs.

IIRC the windows button will just bring up the metro screen. What people really want is the start menu, not necessarily the button.

TBH since Windows 7, I've used the start menu less and less. I now tend to press the windows key and then start typing the name of the program. Back in the days of 95/98/XP, I used to spend much time time organising my start menu, lumping things into "Work", or "Games", or perhaps using names like "Adobe" etc. I derived much pleasure from neatening up the menu and streamlining it.

If I ever get Windows 8, I'll be using Start8 from day one.

Looks good, but will that get used on corporate desktops? I suspect that many will be slow to adapt.

The start screen is the start menu.
all the main programs I use are pinned to the taskbar and if I want another its either use the shortcut key win+Q or just scroll across the start screen.

personally i cant see what the fuss is about, I "adapted" in seconds to this way. Mainly as it was fundamentally no different to the way it was before IMHO.

It's a faff going from the desktop to the start screen and finding what you need.

That exactly what so many said about the start menu.

Exactly. The Start Menu was the work of the devil and everybody wanted Program Manager back. Now they bring back Program Manager for the 21st Century and it is the work of the devil and they want the previous work of the devil back! There is just no pleasing some people!

To be honest, I much prefer the start screen to the old start menu. I hate using my Windows 7 machine at work. I much prefer to use my Atom based Windows 8 tablet than my Core i5 desktop.

Coming at it from a non windows background, I like the start screen, I just swipe the mouse right and click on the app I want to open.

That sounds like launch control on OSX. How similar are they? I use the dock for my most important apps and the a launch manager for launching individual apps.

I don't know about launch control as I've not used anything newer than leopard!

To be fair I rarely use it anyway. I prefer a launch manager like namely or Alfred.

Windows works in exactly the same way. All my common apps are pinned to the taskbar on the desktop and for the not so commonly used applications, I go into the Start Screen (this is exactly the same as in Windows 7, except the Start Menu is smaller, less flexible and doesn't give as much information).
