I don't have that app either, but I do use IM a lot more than text. I have done for over a decade.

I just use my iPhone. If I happen to text someone who has an iPhone and they've registered their number with iCloud then it goes as iMessage.

If there is no Internet it falls back to SMS. Best system as it just works without me doing anything. I don't have to register with an app or open a different app per person etc...

Also I can do group messages with iMessage too. Most of the people I text have it now.

I use whatsapp a lot to talk to a group of friends. It's especially useful when I'm offshore.
But I still send a lot of normal texts too.

If anything I'd say whatsapp is replacing facebook groups and events rather than replacing SMS in my life.

I use messages on my iPhone but probably as much as I did SMS. Though neither are crucial for me. I have not sent an SMS for a year.

Hmm, I did a presentation last week and the figures from IDC for 2012 were 26.3 billion SMS a day and 68.5 billion IMs (although that was all IM services, not just mobile applications).

i send about half a dozen SMS a month, on average, but I haven't used MSN, AOL, Apple, Skype etc. for messaging for a couple of years on a regular basis.

I send a fair few SMS messages over the course of a month although I never get into the number some proper text heads can get into (and who the more staggering 'inclusive text' limits in mobile phone contracts are aimed at). IM seems to have died of death amongst the people I know as they all appear to be on Bookface and I haven't (and continue to refuse to) signed up for yet another data mining opportunity.

Even though I use iMessages a lot, there's a reason I still have unlimited text messages on my contract.

IM seems to be popular somewhere. I have not used it for years.
