We have them where I am today. The Lib Dems, with no sense of irony, love to remind us that if we vote Labour, the Conservatives will get in, failing to remember who gave us a Tory government.

Anyway, post your fond recollections of doorstep debates, voting experiences and any humorous UKIP spelling mistakes here.

No elections here.
I'm always amazed how people draw massive conclusions from local election results.
People often use local elections to register a protest vote. They don't often waste their vote at general elections.

Not seen hide nor hair of any candidates here. No posters, no leaflets. If we hadn't received our polling cards, we'd never have known there was an election happening. There weren't even any of the usual lurkers at the door of the polling station. I've had to actively seek information in order to find out if anyone was standing for the party that's getting my vote from now on, since those yellow bastids sold themselves - and the rest of us - up the Swannee.

It won't matter, because the True Blue Meanie will still get in.

For the record, and I don't care who knows it, I used to vote LibDem. Now I have voted Green Party. As far as I can work out, they're the only party with sensible notions like nationalising stuff like electricity, gas, water and railways again.

Same story here, Heather... except there's no Green candidate to switch to. Not sure what I'm going to do :|

That's what we had at the last general election. Not a peep from anybody.

I haven't had a voting card plus the school opposite my house was business as normal, so I assume there's no elections for my council today.

OK actually I am sure. I'm not going to vote, because it's impossible now.

I only received the bloody thing on Tuesday, and it needs to be posted so they receive it before 10pm today :?

The same thing has happened at least twice before.

Still, this has been a safe Tory seat since before I was born and there was literally no one else to vote for, so whatever. Until we get a sensible voting system there's just no point. The only way to change anything would be to raise an army, but I cba...

As a nation our apathy toward voting, coupled with our complaining about the incumbent party, never ceases to amaze me.

I will be voting this evening in the local elections, because the incumbent is a thoroughly hateful twat.

I have never heard the expression "safe seat" before coming to the UK. If you're not happy, vote, else stop the whining.

Does France have the same system where by if a majority of people vote for party A, then party B and C can take all the seats leaving everyone who voted for A completely unrepresented?

For local elections, the winning part gets half the seats + the % of remaining by which they one. the other party (multi round elections, so only 1 party) takes the remainer.
IE: if there are 40 seats and the winner wins 60/40 they get 20+ 0.6*20 =32 seats. The other party gets 8.

The issue is not with the method, it's with the fact that people keep voting for parties even though they don't do a good job. If you're not happy with the state of affairs, vote elsewhere!

Well I live in an area with a Green dominated council so next time will be voting Green for local elections (no elections today). Still not sure about the national elections yet.

Vote elsewhere? You mean move to a safe Green seat?

I wish I could change the way people around here vote. I've been very vocal about supporting LibDem in the past and they did have some support, but most people here are middle class and selfish. They vote Tory because they generally stand for making middle class people better off, and screw anyone else. It's well established that most people might say anything they thing makes them look good, but then vote selfishly. If it wasn't anonymous, things might be very different.

The French system sounds much fairer. At least my vote would actually count.

That is "mob rules" in which the minority have no rights.

As you can probably guess, I'm strongly in favour of proportional representation where minorities at least have a voice in the house. The system we currently have frequently results in a government that the majority of people did not want.
