http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-22419402 There's nothing about those cars that makes me want to get into one. |

I am sorry to hear of their deaths, but people smoke and drink and if they had a fire on board I doubt that had any fire precautions and where were the fire extinguishers? It all depends on the people you are with, if they screw up then because you can be isolated from the driver things can get out of hand very quickly. |

There should have been a fire extinguisher - I've noticed that even taxis have them in the back. I suspect they were drunk and probably high; maybe some of them were insensible when the fire took hold? It must have been a terrible experience to prevent them from escaping. I wouldn't wish it on anyone. The survivors will never forget this. |

Yes but they could have been removed because previous passengers set them off. They could be empty for that same reason and the driver would never have known. It hopefully will result in safer regulations being drawn up. |

Actually, if the limo is big enough I wonder if there should be a sprinkler system? It's almost a public building... |

Think of the weight of all the water needed. Though considering some limos have pools in that should not be a problem for them. |

There are systems which produce a large amount of foam from a small amount of water, which can be very effective. Another alternative would be a halocarbon system like you find in server rooms, which would save ruining the upholstery even if it terminated the passengers. It's a question of priorities... |

Well it would encourage non smoking if they knew that it would trigger the halocarbon fire suppression system. Though it could be a mobile suicide chamber run by Dignitas. |

Over here I'm assuming it would be illegal to smoke in a limo as it's the drivers place of work. Just like Taxi drivers or builders can't smoke in their cars or vans any more (legally, I'm sure some do). |

That would also apply to passengers, but with the rear invariably screened off how would drivers know that they are smoking? Until we know the cause of the fire it is all speculation. It could have been a fire under the vehicle that was the cause. |

If that is the case then either the limo company or the garage who maintain it will face liability claims. These will be large. Though why are there not more escape exits in such vehicles? |

An example of why I don't like cars that lock their doors when they start moving. It makes it harder to escape if something goes wrong. |

maybe they need an override system such as panic buttons that unlock doors automatically, plus additional protections such as smoke detectors and extra doors. Many of these limos only have one pair of doors right at the back and if there is a problem there then they are stuffed. Maybe the sunroofs were locked down? Maybe they should be arranged so that they can be used as emergency exits? I suspect that the industry will face more regulation over this. |

Coaches have those little hammers and 'strike here' stickers for breaking windows in an emergency. They could easily be put in limos. Okay, once in a blur moon a drunk person may use them for the fun of it, but I'm sure the costs could be recovered from them. |
