It's interesting that 11 years ago when the last solar maximum occurred, not so many of us were dependant on sat-navs and the likes.

I think I read that we're due quite a big one, and if it actually comes this way then a lot of people are likely to notice...

Stupid question, but shouldn't EM radiation travel at 3x10^8 m/s and hence we should have already experienced its effects?

There would have been an EM burst, but particles are the concern here, and they take a while to get here.

Yes they can take a dozen or so hours to reach us. It does give satellite operators an opportunity to put them to sleep till the plasma has passed. That is usually better than hoping for the best. Though it can play havoc with systems that are dependent on satellites. No premiership football is one possible outcome though these CME usually pass by within a few hours.
