Young children reject story characters who are obese, a study suggests.

In experiments with more than 100 UK primary school pupils aged four to seven, investigators found the children voiced negative views about a fictional book character called 'fat Alfie'.

Lead researcher Prof Andrew Hill said: "Young kids like this are a social barometer. They are telling us that society is so conscious of body shape that even young children are able to mirror back what we say about obesity.

They probably pick up on magazines and news programmes that comment about obesity. It does not seem to have any impact on childhood obesity.

Isn't it a good thing that children don't want to become obese and unhealthy?

Although it presents a problem of "hate the sin, not the sinner" which is difficult to teach very young children.

Yes but it does not seem to be reducing childhood obesity, just their perceptions of other obese children. It can also go to the other extreme where kids are anorexic.

I think I see that as the equivalent of the Mail giving you a 'caricature narrative' where you're invited to make assumptions from the get-go. I mean actually calling the kid 'Fat Alfie'? That's how it reads in the link at least.

I got picked on a lot at school for being a fat nerdy, ginger child, last one to be chosen for sports, heckled in class.
If you think it is only this study, you're very mistaken.

Yes but kids can be vicious. I was lucky I was only bullied once and the kid who did it was expelled the next day. There was generally very little trouble at my school. It might have happened but I was not aware of it. Though there were little cliches within the school.
