There's not detail of any control group they used to compare, so how do we know it isn't just age that makes people ill? We've known that since forever. My experience is the exact opposite. My dad retired early due to ill health. That was almost 30 years ago. His health started to improved strait away, and improved even more when they moved to France. Work was making him ill, and the English weather was killing him. That was heart disease and arthritis which both improved. I know other retired people who also seem to be thriving. A couple of them spend half the year abroad working hard on charitable causes, cycle hundreds of miles and generally put most younger people to shame. I think what would possibly kill you off is sitting in a chair watching day time TV and being nagged by your wife constantly. |

Don't tell my father-in-law. He's subconsciously looking for an excuse not to retire even though (given his health) he really should. |

Right wing think tank thinks we should all work longer so the state doesn't have to pay so much pension shocker. |

If you are out of the house from 8am to 6pm then you miss the worst TV and 10 hours of nagging. |

Alternatively raise taxes to pay for it. |

Balls to that. I intend to retire as early as possible and get as much of my taxes back off the government as humanly possible. |

That is if they have not raised the retirement age to 90 by then. It should rise in line with life expectancy but the state benefits will also need to be much higher as most pensioners are struggling as their private pensions have really failed to keep pace. It is even worse for those that have yet to retire, investment returns over the last decade have been flat and so unless you managed to save a lot when you could you might find retiring tough. |

There was a story earlier in the week about a Tory grandee (might have been Lord Young, but I could be wrong) making a public statement that it was actually currently a great time for business as they can use the recession as an excuse to drive down 'labour costs' i.e. employee wages. I mean, I assume everybody who runs a company has thought that, but for Christ's sake you're supposed to be a politician, you don't come out and say it. This is much the same. It may actually be true, but it's bloody stupid to actually say it in public. |

If retirement is harming you, well, you're doing it wrong. Or you did it wrong, more likely. |

The BBC gave you a link to the research paper, if you take a cursory glance at it, you will notice includes an 8 page list referencing the sources upon which it is based. I'm not convinced that the Tory party's malign influence extends as far as the American Journal of Preventive Medicine; Journals of Gerontology or the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research. In another thread you made a swivel eyed claim that all your political friends base their beliefs on data, while all your enemies just make up nasty stories. You are fooling yourself, and you are lazy about it. |

It is been happening around the world. Eventually there will be a backlash against it. |
