Rindfleischetikettierungsueberwachungsaufgabenuebertragungsgesetz - meaning "law delegating beef label monitoring" - has been excised from the lexicon. All 63 letters of it.

Maybe nobody delegates monitoring beef labelling any more . Only German would have a specific word for someone whose job it is to say "You, go and keep an eye on the labels on that beef". Do they have a different word for delegating ham label monitoring? And if so, is that word still in use?

The reason that the word was created was to deal with the BSE crisis. Now that is over the delegation has ended, and so there is no reason to keep the word. Apparently it is a foible of German government ministries to create such compound words.

Actually is a foible of German - as I am sure Big_D will explain

There is still however

Donaudampfschifffahrtsgesellschaftskapitaenswitwe - meaning the "widow of a Danube steamboat company captain".

The podcast I was listening to mentioned it being government that creates these words. I think the widow of a Danube steamboat company captain might still exist in theory :) hence not been scrapped yet. When I originally posted I thought Big D might have commented.
