It's usually a load of BS in the cinema!

It's hard to buy a quality set that isn't smart these days.

My parents bought a Sony last year, and didn't even know it could stream video from the lan, youtube etc.. They'll never use the features even now they know it can.

Can't imagine I'd have much use for 'smart' features other than the streaming side of it - I've got a tablet that lasts days in sleep mode and will always have better functionality. What am I missing? :? :|

I knew 3D TV was a fad. Smart TVs are the way to go IMO but at the mo, they're still hit and miss in functionality.

Exactly what was on my mind when I bought a non 3D, smart TV last year.

Actually nothing. I was unconvinced by 3D until I was in Currys and saw one in action. It was an active system and I could actually see things in 3D. In fact I never watched so much football on TV in years. I was convinced by the demonstration. The passive systems like the cinema meant I only got headache trying to look at the image.

I do agree with you about Tablets. I watch TVcatchup on my iPad and it uses a lot less energy (10W) than my TV which even in eco mode uses more than 80W. So I cannot even see the point of a Smart TV even without an Apple TV that can do most of what Smart TV are supposed to do anyway.

The Apple TV box that I've got covers the majority of my streaming needs, and what it doesn't do, the apps on my iPad do (apart from 4OD, which is just a licensing issue and should be resolved the next time the licence is renewed).

Between an Apple TV and iPad you can do anything that a SmartTV can do. So do you really need a new TV?

I saw some LG and Samsung 3D TV's at the Gadget Show this year. (The LG ones seemed to have amuch better 3D effect).
I can see them being good for sports programmes etc. The pole vault demo was particularly good.
But I have no interest in it for watching a film once in a blue moon. Unless we get 3D broadcasts on regular channels (ie Freeview) in either 1080 or 4kHD, then there no reason for me to buy it.

Nope, and I'm not in the market for one either, I was just going with the general flow of conversation.
For what it's worth, I had zero interest in 3D TV before this thread, that hasn't changed. (8+)

I had an old CRT TV before, so yes I needed a new one.

That I can appreciate, plus if you opted for a Apple TV or similar you would still have needed a new TV.

I was mildly interested once I had seen a demonstration, but still wanted to wait to see how things developed. If it turned out to be a fad then I would not have lost out and ended up with a TV that needed replacement.

SMART TV's full of security holes
Quote:
It's been known for some time that “smart TVs” are dumb about security, but a German researcher has demonstrated that the stupidity goes so far as to enable remote snooping or even a takeover of the in-set computer.

Another reason not to get one. I do not need smart features. A decent screen and low energy consumption and inbuilt tuners for freeview and freesat would suit me perfectly. The problem is that they insist on putting loads of crapware in as well.

I've got to say I use the iPlayer app on mine quite a lot.
I never use it for things like Facebook though. Much easier to use my phone or laptop.
