If the law doesn’t quite fit, then Kent Police are not above making it up as they go along. That is the conclusion of local photographer Alex Turner who, following his arrest last week for being too tall – and possibly looking like a terrorist – was stopped by police again on Sunday, and required to hand over ID.

Serves him right for lurkingl with the intention of being tall.

I'm in danger of repeating myself...

It's a real shame, because I shall be in Dorset that weekend. Otherwise, I'd definitely be down the High Street peacefully protecting my right to photograph anything in a public place.

I don't know what's happening to this country. Are we wilfully walking into a submissive police state, or are we just too apathetic to do anything about it now?

:x

From the BBC:

Quote:
A woman who says she was handcuffed, detained and threatened with arrest for filming officers on her mobile telephone is to challenge the Metropolitan Police in the High Court.

This Terrorism Act is quite the catch all as the girl doing the filming appears to be all of 5'2". Are all terrorists quite short or very tall?

The Terrorism Act could have been written by George Orwell for all intents and purposes.

Er it's not illegal to film the Police. Police Fail.

These Constables DO go to Police College right? Do they teach UK law there?

I suggest anyone who doesn't agree with this sort of behaviour bungs some money Liberty's way.

I once again find myself getting angry. However, it's not just at Kent police, who are clearly a bunch of assholes. It's at whoever called it in and the government for making that person fearful enough to do so.

A police officer responded to a report concerning a man who was taking photographs of buildings and people in Chatham town centre.

Who are these people?! If I see someone walking down my street taking photos, will I be interested? Yes. Would I call the police? Absolutely not! Whether I had a problem with it or not, I would most likely go and talk to them and show an interest in what they're doing. This culture of "if it's unusual - it must be terrorism" has got to stop. This is what the Hitler Youth started with kids "telling" on their mates and parents and families etc. It's unacceptable. The 5-0 are not a replacement for the community.

Quote:
Whilst the specific circumstances of this incident need to be established there are occasions when it is necessary for the police to address the behaviour of individuals. I am confident that the public would want us to do this to ensure their safety and well-being.

Well, the "public" are idiots if they perceive this is the way to

I'm certainly not in that group. I would dearly love to join the protest, but Chatham is just too far away for me to make it. Probably just as well, because no doubt I'd get arrested for taking photos
