Hmmm... I'll stick with my USB drives over cloud storage though

I prefer FW800 but I do agree with you. I have almost nothing in the cloud.

Most people are the opposite; everything is in the cloud, and they probably had a USB flash drive but don't know where they left it.

I'm very unusual in having a proper home server with all my stuff on, but that's like my own little cloud anyway; I don't need USB to access it.

Yes those of use here are the outliers. We are not the norm in terms of what we do with our devices. I suspect that forumites if they use Android are more likely to be using the latest version of Android than normal. iOS users generally use the latest version so have a less fragmented OS distribution. My external drives are like my own cloud which I look after.

On my laptop, I have trackpad, mouse, keyboard, external monitor and RJ45 Ethernet cable...

The inbuilt keyboard and trackpad are okay for on the move, but the Logitech trackpad is much bigger and much better for multi-touch. Likewise, I have a Microsoft Natural keyboard plugged in, because the inbuilt keyboard causes RSI. A second display is essential for my work and the 802.11n doesn't offer very good performance, when connecting to my NAS. Additionally, I need to copy my photos from my camera to my laptop.

It isn't just storage that uses USB.

While some devices allow you to daisy chain them most do not. Then there is the issue of sufficient power being supplied to some devices.

I didn't suggest it was - I was responding to Amnesia's comment about not using "the cloud".

However, I presume you don't lug all that stuff around with you to use on the train or in the park? Ultra thin laptops are not targeted at desktop replacement, but a powered USB hub would act as a convenient docking station when you wanted to plug it all in and use it like that.

Yes they are very different markets. If you use a ultralight laptop then you might simply use the cloud so that if the computer is stolen you do not lose the data, but the USB hub might not be used at all.

I want a light laptop with good battery life just cos I'm sick of the weight of my current one and having to charge it every day. I bloody hate batteries...

Unlikely with ever more powerful graphics and demanding more power. Even the latest macbooks need to be recharged daily.

I'm not playing games or anything, listening to music and surfing is what I mostly do. That's why I'm interested in Haswell. We're slowly getting to the point where I'll have to decide if I need a laptop with a burner or not... I burn discs of downloaded MP3s for when I'm gaming on the PS3, in the shower or whatever. I like sh1t loud ;)

I currently have a laptop with a drive and another external drive, so I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

In your case it is the screen that is probably using most of the energy. Once OLED screens become cheap and plentiful then I can see it extending battery life considerably.

I'll just leave this here.

Latest MacBook Air seems to get 15 hours of use out of a single charge.
