Maybe the NSA made them put one in?

Hell, I would have put one in if I'd been (capable) of coding it.

If you are a developer it would have benefits in some situations, but will the public like it? Though to be fair I suspect that the vast majority do not care and would not know.

It's all very well adding a checker to Google Play, but lots of people used other download sources. Especially those on older Android versions that can't upgrade from Market Place to Play. They have to go to manufacturers websites for a lot of newer apps.

This looks like it was all in hand by Google for months. The only question for me is why the announcement of the whole a week before the patch? The real problem is that will most users actually update their version of android?

Is google issuing a patch actually any use to most people? Fine if you've got a Nexus of some sort, but they're a small percentage of the Android devices sold. Everyone else has to wait for it to be cleared by HTC, Samsung etc and then by their telcos. It'll be months before it's rolled out worldwide.

And then do most consumers actually update their OS? I know that with iOS it is a remarkably high percentage but that might be down to the walled garden that Apple provides.

I really wouldn't be too worried about it, unless you regularly download apps from unverified sources. Who does that anyway? It's a risk in itself.

Personally I am unaffected but know a few Android users. You would need to be reckless to get software from unverified sources. It is the same reason why I only buy software from a few stores or use original disks. As this will be patched it will be very hard in time for it to be used by malware developers, so as you say it should not be worth worrying about.
