Oh dear, that story probably isn't going away. I wouldn't be surprised if the EU gets brought into that, eventually.

Well even ad-blockers need to raise money somehow. ;)

Yeah, but taking it from ad companies is a quick way to ruin your credibility.

I agree but how many are willing to pay for ad blockers. I would not mind ads so much if they were not so obtrusive. The advertisers have themselves to blame.

The Story blew up last week, when a blog site accused them of accepting bribes from larger companies to whitelist them. The reply on their website last week stated that no company can bribe its way on to the whitelist by paying for it.

You can find the original post here: http://adblockplus.org/blog/pallengate- ... usst-luegt

It is a long post, so I won't try and translate it all, bung it through Google Translate, if you want.

It all started when the owner of mobilegeeks, which lives from ad revenue, accused Adblock of accepting payments for whitelisting sites. Adblock categorically deny this charge.

That said, I haven't used Adblock for several years now. I'm happy to view ads for the privilege of being able to view a website, but I use FlashBlock and NoScript yo block annoying animated ads.

I would drop ad blockers more if there were a noscript for safari. I use click to flash already.

I don't mind ads in theory, but they slow everything down usually and are incredibly open to abuse security-wise. I can think of any number of sites that'll crash a mobile device, for instance.

When it comes to mobile sites the numbers of cookies that get dumped on your tablet make browsing problematic.

I suppose that's the point, it's not just 'ads' any more. If it was just something that displayed on a web page I viewed, fine. But it isn't. It's tracking cookies and data warehousing and profiling and.. It's all way, way too 'big brother'. If you want to put an ad on a web page I'm viewing, then go ahead. I don't mind that. It's the fact you want to be able to track me all over the internet, gather data about me I didn't give you permission to have, keep a profile on me I don't have access to to check if it's correct or not...

All of that kind of stuff means I'm going to block you. It's that simple.

Who would pay for an ad blocker? Me, to be honest, if it was a reasonable amount, say less than a tenner. Who is going to pay for an ad blocker that takes money from online advertisers? Absolutely bloody nobody.

That is why I prefer to do all my browsing on my computer rather than on an iPad. I can at least block tracking cookies and block ads and flash.

That's why I love my Windows 8 tablet. I have the best of both worlds. A portable device, with a full web browser, with all addons.
