They were saying the same thing twenty years ago when I left university. |

It was the same in the early eighties, and that was long before the surge in graduates. |

Stupid, stupid decisions by politicians who seemed totally unable to comprehend that increasing supply doesn't necessarily increase demand. Not the current lot, the previous lot, not that they were any different. Everybody (and I mean literally pretty much everybody) in the academic sector were telling Blair & Co this would happen. But all they were interested in was the '50% of 18 year olds go to University' soundbite, regardless of whether it was viable or wise. The result? Lots of unemployed 21 year olds with £30K of debt on their shoulders before they even start. The worst decision we ever made as a society was to let politicians actually run anything more sophisticated than a tap. |

![]() It's easy to sympathise, but that's democracy for you. Half the population are below average intelligence, and many of those are down right stupid and selfish. They all get to vote, and if you don't appeal to them you won't get into power. |

Years ago a degree course required an IQ around 120. Which is above average. So to have loads of average bods doing degrees must mean degrees become devalued. I heard that employers basically avoided people who did certain courses and universities unless it was specific to the job. So much of the problems were predicted. As you said no one wants to be in the 50% not going to university as they would be seen as stupid. |

Education good. More education, more gooder. Using single criterion to estimate the value of a huge aggregate increase in educational attainment, more not good. |

Ooh, is this like top trumps? Being our of a job bad. Being out of a job with £20k of debt badder. Wasting an afternoon at the beach bad. Wasting three years of your life on a degree nobody give a flying one about badder. Is that how it works? |
