I agree. I have been looking at simplifying my diet and cutting out the ready meals has reduced my salt and sugar intake considerably. I now know what is in my food far more than before. My food also tastes better, because it does not have to be bland to appeal to the masses.

Same here, largely, but we seem to be in a minority.

My local butcher has done very well from the horse-meat scandal. I wonder how long before people get lazy again and get their meat from supermarkets?

It's weird that I know not a single person who regularly uses ready meals.
I've bought maybe a dozen in my life, but not to eat in one go. I use them to add variety when I cook a Chinese or Indian meal for friends. Its nice to have lots of dishes to choose from, and my spring rolls are not as good as Ken Hom's.

I know a few who do. I lived only on ready meals for years because of the memory. I still do not cook but do everything in the microwaves. Though I was shown how to do soups which meant another way to use vegetables. Some might use a ready made pizza and then add a few things to it. So over the last 7 years I have slowly managed to find alternatives to ready meals. Also if you watch TV in the afternoons you will see loads of ads for companies like wiltshire farm foods or Oakhouse Foods so there are plenty of elderly who rely on them.

I used to have a few ready meals in the freezer, for when I came back from a long week away and wanted something on a Friday evening, but 99.9% of what I cook is fresh.

I usually have something in the the freezer esp if SWMBO is on a diet then she likes them as they are totally calorie controlled. I have some tinned soup and every now and then crave a Fray Bentos Steak and Kidney Pudding - not sure why - so have one of those in the store cupboard as well

I freeze leftovers so no need to buy stuff like that; just make extra now and then.

I have plenty of prepared dishes in the freezer, and pull out what I need the following day. Having a freezer makes a huge difference.

I'm currently on crutches and can't really stand, but I am still cooking fresh for myself. I will be cooking a chilli later today, making enough to last me a couple of days.

I like to cook however my favourite dishes don't seem to please the crowds ( watercress soup, low-cal caulitflower cheese etc). I kinda miss the simplicity of my mum's cooking sometime (grilled chicken breast plus plain boiled rice was a common occurrence).

I am able to remember older recipes that I was taught when a child but have to work out ways to get around the no cooker no oven safety system I have. I steam my rice in the microwave and if you can still grill why not do that.
