Very sad. Not the None O'Clock News was required viewing at school amongst my peers. He was one of those who helped to shape the sense of humour of a generation. Right now, Twitter is alive with people posting their favourite sketches and clips featuring him. The last thing I saw him in was the series Dancing on the Edge where he played a hotel proprietor with the sleaze cranked up to 11. |

I saw him on a tv prog in the last year. I believe it was some sort of documentary. I actually thought that he was having some sort of episode because he was slurring his words and sounded nothing like the Mel Smith I once knew from tv. A actually thought he'd suffered a stroke and was in the process of recovering. He was a very funny man and is a great loss to British comedy at such a young age. |

There were so many great sketches that he was in. He was brilliant. A truly great loss. |

A sad loss indeed although I hadn't been terribly aware of him being in or behind anything for some considerable time (but then again I wasn't looking).
A truly great sketch and IIRC it was actually notorious enough for darts to try and clean up its image... a bit. |
