Beat me to it. Was going to post this. Apparently also going to be an exposé on dispatches on the OOH provider Harmoni.

Either way, it doesn't take a genius to work out that if you drop the pay from £20 per call (the old NHS direct) to £7-9 per call (the new 111 service), you'll struggle to make ends meet.

NHS Direct pulled out of North Essex a little while ago, which means the 111 service isn't available here anyway.

You mean they did thier sums wrong and instead of gouging the taxpayer they are losing money. They should be forced to carry on until the end of the contract. They signed it and you can bet that if it was the other way round they would be claiming they are only getting what the contract says they should be paid

Exactly bankruptcy should be the only legal get out clause for providers. If you deliberately underbid to win the contract you should not be allowed to increase the fees after the bids are closed.
