Post subject:  Scientist to eat lab-grown beefburger

I'm reminded of that scene in The Fly where Geena Davis says the steak tastes 'synthetic', though that's a totally different scenario... Anyway, I can't imagine he's gonna turn round and tell the world it tastes like crap. Not that I'm saying it will.

Chances are that in the not too distant future we could all be eating synthetic meat like this. Maybe an end to vegans and vegetarians as well?

I don't see why it would be the end to vegetarians. Plenty of different reasons people don't eat meat.

What I want is for him to eat the burger, say 'Actually, that tastes fine.', burp, and then his head explodes like that bloke in Scanners. Not because I wish these scientists any ill, I just want to see the effect it would have on MacDonalds sales.

This has to be the most expensive burger ever. Hope they don't over cook it. I'm assuming that as we know it's been grown in a lab, it's parasite free and presumably damn near sterile. I'd imagine you could just have it raw.

Many vegetarians are meat free because of animal cruelty. Without the cruelty aspect many will return to meat substitutes.

Many vegetarians eat "meat substitutes" already.

Meat is more complex than just a bunch of protein strands though. I expect this will taste no better than Quorn.

If it does taste better it is might be a good thing. Though is this a stepping stone to Soylent Green?

Qorn tastes fine. I had digestion problems, when I was younger (well, they are coming back, with a vengeance) and I spent over a year eating vegetarian, because I couldn't digest meat. I found it tasted okay.

Nowadays, I've avoided beef and pork for so long because of my gout (the medication causes poor eyesight as a side effect, so I tried to control it through diet), I can no longer digest it. It would be interesting to see how it tastes, but more importantly, whether it would be digestible for me.

That said, I'll probably stick with farm fresh local produce.

I disagree.
While the taste may almost (and I emphasise almost) be acceptable, the texture certainly isn't.
A vegi friend tried passing it of as meat once. Everyone spotted it very quickly.
You can't beat the real thing.

I always found Quorn to be bland. Bean feast was an acceptable alternative but it did require loads of spices to cover the taste. The real difference was in the fibre which was noticeable on exit. :shock:

The other benefits such as lower land use and lower carbon emissions might make it viable for consumers. It will also lack any antibiotics from normal agriculture. I think if the price is right it could be a viable option for many.
