I think I'd be on benefits before I put up with those conditions. Christ, the stress might see you on benefits!

I know a couple of people on them. It's basically a way of not paying for a temp agency

The problem is that the government will not do anything as zero hour contracts have been immensely useful in keeping official unemployment figures down.

Despite being at my current place of employment for over 2 years, I'm still on a zero-hour contract at the previous place. Never had a P45 from them.

have you used a base ball bat on any (scum bag) member of management, that may hasten dismissal

i would not worry about any court case as serial offenders walk free every day ...

zero hour contracts are really the only sort of contract a temp agency can issue as well

the only way out of a zero hour contract is dismissal by criminal conviction
that way benefits can be claimed ...

Some firms that run zero hour contracts also have an exclusivity clause - you must gain permission before seeking other work.

Yes but a temp agency is motivated to get you work, even regular work. I had an ex who temped for years with the same organisation, doing a three day week. It suited her.

Very possibly. The problem is that zero hour contracts are very one sided and if millions are denied rights like sick pay and holiday pay then it is only a matter of time before employers extend it to other emplyees.

On C4 news last night on Vince Cable was suggesting that such things may be made illegal. It would be good if he actually did something useful for employees.
