I've ordered several at work for various devices, and the secretary/accounts team always go for the cheaper option on Amazon rather than the one I've chosen.
Result being that we've had at least 2 that have come apart when someone's pulled them from the socket, revealing the internals - still live.
Poorly put together, and while I'm not an electrical engineer, I'd say the wiring inside is far below the appropriate thickness for something that's just soldered straight to the back of the pins.

I have always opted for originals though hunt down bargains, like an adaptor from Asda.

I always found official power leads for the iPhones to quickly deteriorate and perish around the wire at both ends.

Had mine for 2 years and it's about as good as new. Wire's a bit grubbier though.

They once did a comparison tear down between an official apple charger and a copy one.

The copy had zero protection against shorts or over heating etc...

The apple has double and triple redundancy to ensure that anything like that doesn't happen.

I've also always used Apple chargers and never had a problem with them.

Yes but that happens with most electronics. It is the weak spot for all cables.

hasnt happened with the blackberry , nexus 7, samsung tab 2 or the tom tom power charging cables all with the same usage patterns but did happen with the all the iphone and ipod cables. Must be the unluckiest apple cable owner in the world..

I have a couple of cables that are failing near the socket, but they are also Apple cables, but since nearly all my cables are Apple as I only have Apple kit it is to be expected. :oops:

I only have genuine Apple chargers. Though not so sure about the lightning cables.
