Not sure that crime is down for that reason. I think the fact that most items previously stolen were high value but DVD players can be had for less than £30 so on the black market is only worth £10 or less. Hardly worth it. Mobiles are valuable enough to justify the risks.

I know of another policeman who was part of the armed unit at Buckingham Palace and he left because the attitude of the new people were rather gung-ho and trigger happy.
