No internet access in 17% of UK homes, ONS data shows

Quote:
Four million homes in the UK are still not connected to the internet, the Office of National Statistics said.

The ONS's data said the majority, 59%, of those unconnected said they simply did not need to be online.

Twenty per cent said they lacked the computer skills needed to get online, while another 10% said they could not afford it.

Three-quarters of the UK's adults access the web daily, with mobile browsing growing most quickly.

Just over half of all adults accessed the internet on their phones - more than double the total in 2010.

The most active age group online was the 25-34 bracket.

The first two!

The first trumps the necessity to learn any computer skills.

My father-in-law bought the cheapest laptop Argos had and ended up throwing it at the wall in frustration before he even bothered getting Internet.

I had a go on the laptop and it is appalling that Argos feel they could sell a piece of [LIFTED] like that.

Yup, it was. Took about 3 minutes to boot from brand new. It got me so angry I felt like taking it to trading standards. It's little wonder my father-in-law threw it against the wall.

This, or a variation of it?

My father bought it too, and he has 'an idea' of computers. I wouldn't use it to play solitaire on. It's the nastiest piece of crap I've ever seen, computer-wise.

Yet those are just the computers that the government want people to use.

My 90 year old grandmother didn't even buy a video. What use for the internet does she have?

A lot of people really do not need internet access.

My nan can barely work her TV and DVD player. She's got no chance of learning about the internet at her age with her poor vision. She can't even read news papers any more.
