It's more the fans they are bothered about. A tennis tournament may attract say 20,000 fans. A football tournament is going to attract 200,000. Whole different ball of wax.

Many people told them before the decision was made not to hold it there. too much bribery.

Again, I think it's one of those judgement calls for the fans to make.
It is, after all, just a game. Or are the fans actively involved in the kicking the ball these days?
