These aren't the bean counters per se. These are management consultants who are not always a great saving. They might be suggesting things that the management might be implementing anyway.

It reports that, despite a pledge to cut back on the use of management consultants, KPMG, PWC, Deloitte and Ernst & Young are now being asked back by the government so major projects like Universal Credit and HS2 are finished before the 2015 general election.

The government is so intertwined with that lot that it makes little difference what department of the company they hail from - the inevitable BS still needs to be calculated and the government or relevant authority given the 'correct' answer.

The problem with management consultancy is that many are snake oil salesmen, and many of the suggestions from the rest could be worked out without a degree in management consultancy. If you have good senior managers they could work out most of the problems eventually. Problem is with many managers is that they are over confident and over reach themselves, and have no appreciation of their weaknesses. Bringing in outsiders to give a fresh perspective is always good, but it does not need to cost a fortune. Though most organisations ignore the skills within the organisation that could make a difference.
