Quote:
Ben Wizner, director of the American Civil Liberties Union's Speech, Privacy & Technology Project, said: "When a soldier who shared information with the press and public is punished far more harshly than others who tortured prisoners and killed civilians, something is seriously wrong with our justice system.

"A legal system that doesn't distinguish between leaks to the press in the public interest and treason against the nation will not only produce unjust results, but will deprive the public of critical information that is necessary for democratic accountability."

I'd have to agree.

+1

The problem is that those that torture are following orders of their politicians. Whistleblowers expose the politicians as criminals.

What makes you think the people in charge are interested in democratic accountability? All evidence suggests exactly the opposite.

I was being idealistic. :( You hope that they would be reasonably honourable.

Knowing American sentences, I'm surprised it isn't longer.

It is said that with good behaviour he could be out in eight years.

Well, they didn't choose to shoot him, though I would expect that some would be demanding that.

He would have got far less for shooting a couple of black kids.

It is mixed up country and what he did was more embarrassing than dangerous. The apache gunner was guilty of a war crime and still roams free, the man who exposed his crime gets 35 years. The exposure of what the US ambassadors was embarrassing but most of would agree with the comments about our leaders.

Don't some presidents issue pardons on their way out? That said, Obama's a better Republican than his predecessor in some respects...

Obama will not pardon him. He has been more relentless on whistleblowers than any other president.
