Nick de Bois, secretary of the 1922 committee of backbench MPs, says Britain has a "sales job to do" to convince talented professionals not to leave the country.
He said: "We live in a very mobile, global market people can look around and they can judge where they want to go. My concern is that people are putting their own interests first and looking to beyond the European Union.
"We have to convince those people, who we have invested so much in, to make Britain their first choice. We have to continue to drive lower taxes, we have to keep driving the change and reform in our public services."

I suspect that these figures are offset by the arrival of well trained professionals from the periphery of the EU as austerity is killing opportunities there. Problem is that many more are going to other places instead of coming here.

Not surprising.
Foreign homes in the sun are much cheaper now than they were a few years ago. If you want a retirement in the sun, now's the time to leave.

I think that these are workers who are leaving, also would you emigrate to Greece or Spain with nearly 30% unemployment. I think that these people are going to the Far East where the long term potential is far higher than here or Europe. These are not retiring just yet.

Less surveillance, less violence, less open drunkenness, less crime, more friendly communities...

Where I now live is like the England of my youth, very little crime, neighbours are friendly, no violence.

When I lived in Southampton, I could forget to close the window on my car and my neighbour would ring the door bell the next morning and I'd remove my briefcase from the car and close the window. Now, my old neighbour can't leave his locked car on the same street over night, because at least the mirrors and aerial will be missing in the morning and it will be scratched.

I could leave the French windows open when I went shopping, now the neighbours have to close them, if they leave the room!

British news and tv series, like all the cops series (motorway cops, traffic cops, Brit cops etc.) don't help boost the image of the UK either. I look at the news and generally think I am glad that I am not in Blighty.

400 emigrate every day, but how many are returning? More than half of those who leave come back within a couple of years, apparently.

The IoW reminds me much more of the England of my youth - Slower pace of life, everyone is that bit more relaxed, there's less crime and, from my experience, the drunken louts are fewer and farther between in the towns.

I know a guy who never locks his car, and has been known to leave his car on the drive with his keys on the dash for a fortnight while he's away on holiday. He even makes it known to the neighbours - in case they need to get in the shed to borrow the mower or something. To me, that's stunningly naive, and inviting disaster, but he's never been done.

You could say that about a lot of countries. It is just that some are better at managing themselves than our government are.

It doesn't matter who I speak to but everyone says this whether they're 30 or 90. Part of me is starting to wonder whether the internet/media has made the system appear worse than it really is. I once managed to leave my car doors unlocked in a supermarket (mispressed the keyfob). It was still there when I got back.

When I lived on IoW it was quite common for people not to lock their cars - simple reason being if someone nicked it then they would not get far - wouldn't get it off the island.

Also knew several people who would always leave their front door unlocked.

Nice to see that IoW still remains a little it like that now - more trusting.

I do think that the real risks are minimal, but people are not necessarily leaving because of crime. They are leaving because it is impossible to get on the housing ladder without a very well paid job or help from the bank of mum and dad. Then the real costs of living are substantially higher than officially reported. So you can have a higher standard of living elsewhere for the same money. The weather might be a bonus and the long term prospects will be substantially better than here.

It isn't much different here. The prices aren't so high as the UK, but neither are the wages.

Here it is still very common for several generations to live in a house and building extensions, with separate entrances and facilities.

I think that median wages are similar but the levels of personal debt are significantly lower and rents are much lower than here, so disposable income can be higher with the same income.
