Working shorter hours may be 'bad for health'

Quote:
A shorter working week often just means employees have to complete the same tasks in less time.
And having more time at home - particularly for women - means they spend longer on housework and childcare, the research suggests.
A study conducted by Professor Robert Rudolf, at Korea University in Seoul, looked at the impact reducing the working week had on the happiness of married and co-habiting couples with children.
South Korea introduced a Five Day Working policy in 2004, which saw Saturdays become an official non-working day and the working week reduced from 44 to 40 hours.
The aim of the policy was to enhance living standards, boost the country's weak leisure industry and reduce the negative effects of excessively long working hours, including low productivity and high rates of industrial injury.

Very Korea-specific, I want one carried out in the UK - if shorter hours are stressing you out you're doing it wrong or have someone nagging you at home :P

I think that in the past people usually died within 7 years or so of their retirement. Though if they retired early they felt too young to retire and so found other things to occupy their lives. As a result they lived longer.

As far as a principle this will also mean that people with the shortest hours ie zero hour contracts would probably have the highest stress and so shortest life expectancy.

I'd love to work fewer hours. I get up at 5 in the morning and I'm back home usually after 7 in the evening, which usually means a quick bite to eat and go to bed.

That was the advantage of working for myself, I could get up at 8:55 and still be in the office on time! :D

When I was living 20 yards from the pub I was working in I was always late!
