That was my first thought on hearing that news. Fingers crossed for everyone on board, apparently 3 still missing.

Levick wasn't involved. He's been posting about it on FB.

I hope that everyone is okay. Did he use that route?

I do use CHC super puma choppers, and I will be flying out for Total (as that flight was) but not to that rig.

The fact it was a L2 variant of the Super Puma rather than the EC225 version suggests it was a different cause than the two ditchings last year.

The last two were gearbox failures weren't they? This one sounded like a sudden loss of power - would a gearbox failure have that effect?

Glad to hear you weren't on that flight

A gear box failure would cause it to drop out of the sky.
A gear box failure or double engine failure at low altitude wouldn't give the pilots time to react. They would have been low that close to the airport.
At higher altitudes with a double engine failure they'd have time to autogyrate and make a safe(ish) ditching.

Personally I do worry about CHC's maintainance.
A chopper arrived on the RG5 last year when I was there with a massive crack running along it's horizontal stabiliser. The pilot didn't notice it during his pre flight checks. One of the helideck crew spotted it just before take off.
It was shut down on deck for two days while CHC engineers ame out to fix it.

What are the death rates for the trip and being on the rig? I would imagine most deaths are from the choppers?

Statistically the most danerous job on the rig is Banksman.
The last time I saw a presentation on the issue (which was quite a few years ago), more banksmen are killed offshore than all other personel put together.

All Super Pumas grounded
How's that going to work? They could barely keep up with crew changes when they grounded just the EC225 variant last year. If they're grounding the lot it's goint to be chaos.
