I'll update this thread closer to the time ;)

Did anyone else read the article and think along the lines of 'Skynet'?

Yep.

Is the steam powered EATR? Will use biological debris from the battle field (including corpses) to help generate the electricity it needs? (Heard it on Slice of Sci-Fi last night, at work and waiting for a meeting, so no time to read the link)

From the link:

Quote:
Leave it to the military to dream big. In its recently released "Unmanned Aircraft Systems Flight Plan 2009-2047" report, the US Air Force details a drone that could fly over a target and then make the decision whether or not to launch an attack, all without human intervention. The Air Force says that increasingly, humans will monitor situations, rather than be deciders or participants, and that "advances in AI will enable systems to make combat decisions and act within legal and policy constraints without necessarily requiring human input." Programming of the drone will be based on "human intent," with real actual humans monitoring the execution, while retaining the authority and ability to override the system. It's all still extremely vague, with literally no details on exactly how this drone will come into existence, but we do know this: the Air Force plans to have these dudes operational by 2047. We're just holding out to see what those "classified" pages are all about.

Scary stuff...

Quote:
1 - A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2 - A robot must obey any orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3 - A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Laws_of_Robotics

Much further down, David Langford’s suggestions:
Quote:
1 - A robot will not harm authorized Government personnel but will terminate intruders with extreme prejudice.
2 - A robot will obey the orders of authorized personnel except where such orders conflict with the Third Law.
3 - A robot will guard its own existence with lethal antipersonnel weaponry, because a robot is bloody expensive.

Which is probably more appropriate here.

And anyone who is anyone should know where these came from:

Quote:
1 - "Serve the public trust"
2 - "Protect the innocent"
3 - "Uphold the law"
4 - (Classified)

I do actually.

The smooth surfaces of the head really get rid of the creases in my shirts. The steam comes out of the eyes.
